How to study with an AI tutor without letting it think for you
Last updated: October 2026
AI can explain anything instantly — which is exactly the risk. Reading a perfect explanation feels like learning, but in the exam you have to produce the answer yourself. These habits, based on well-established learning research, make AI study sessions actually stick.
1. Ask to be tested, not told
Retrieval practice — pulling information out of your memory — is one of the most reliable ways to learn. Instead of "explain photosynthesis", ask "quiz me on photosynthesis, one question at a time, and don't give the answer until I try."
2. Explain it back (the Feynman method)
After the AI explains something, close the explanation and teach it back in your own words as if to a younger student. Ask the tutor to point out anything missing or wrong. Gaps you can't explain are gaps you'd lose marks on. Velpro's tutor has a built-in Feynman "explain it back" mode for this.
3. Space it out
Coming back to a topic after a few days — just as you're starting to forget — makes memories last far longer than cramming. Plan short reviews of old topics every week, not only new material.
4. Mix topics
Interleaving means mixing question types (for example moles, bonding and rates in one quiz). It feels harder, but it trains you to recognise which method a question needs — exactly what the exam demands.
5. Keep a misconceptions log
When you get something wrong, write down the wrong belief, not just the right answer ("I thought catalysts shift equilibrium"). Re-test those beliefs specifically. Velpro does this automatically with misconception tracking.
6. Ground the AI in your own textbook
General chatbots may explain things at the wrong level or use a different exam board's content. Give the AI your textbook or syllabus, and check anything surprising against it or your teacher.
7. Don't outsource the plan either
Decide — or let your tutor decide — what you'll study each day until the exam, and stick to it. An unplanned chat session drifts toward topics you already like.
A 30-minute AI study session
- 5 min: quiz on last week's topic (spaced retrieval).
- 10 min: learn one new idea with the tutor.
- 5 min: explain it back without looking.
- 8 min: mixed quiz on today's and older topics.
- 2 min: add mistakes to your misconceptions log.
Velpro is built around exactly this loop: a diagnostic, a plan tied to your exam date, a daily mission, and tutor, quiz, podcast, mind map and slide formats. Learn how Velpro works.
